How on Earth is really pleased to announce the launch of a new campaign by beauty editor and co-founder of Green and Blacks, Jo Fairley, on behalf of
WEN (Women's Environmental Network).
The campaign is called "Storm in a Teacup" and it is asking people to look more closely at the choices they make when buying beauty products.
We are ecstatic that this is being raised as an issue. The vast majority of people are aware of the environmental challenges facing us and have started to look at particular areas of our lives to reduce our impact, but cosmetics have so far been left out of this debate.
Whilst it is perhaps understandable given that it is not a major part of our lives in the way that food, travel and housing are, its significance shouldn't be underestimated.
Perhaps if we look at the term 'cosmetic products' not just as make-up, but in the way the beauty industry uses it which includes personal care items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant and toothpaste, it's easier to understand the significance.
Probably every single one of us uses a minimum of 3 products a day and few of us know where they've come from, who's made them, how they got to us and what they contain. We'd love to see greater awareness of those factors so that people can make informed choices about the products they use.
