Organic Skin, Hair and Body Care
What is organic?
Organic produce is grown according to a set of principles and standards. These include severe restriction of the use of artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides, a ban on using any GM (genetic modification) technology and instead using natural solutions to keep the soil healthy. It is considered to be a more sustainable form of cultivation and is friendlier to the environment.
What is organic when it comes to personal care products?
Broadly speaking, there are two different types of beauty products that describe themselves as organic.
The first type, and the most common, contains organically-grown ingredients in varying quantities. Some companies try to include as high an organic content as possible, but consumer caution is advised as there are many products which claim to be organic but only use a tiny amount of organic ingredients.
The second type goes a stage further and restricts both the type and amount of processing of the organic ingredients and also the other ingredients allowed. The percentage of organic ingredients can still vary but it is guaranteed to be of a high level. These products are usually certified by one of the independent organisations
such as the
Soil Association,
Ecocert,
Australian Certified Organic or the
USDA.
How do I know which to choose?
At How on Earth, whenever a product is denoted organic, we promise it will contain a very high level of organic ingredients, most are over 80%, and some are even 100% organic. If you are out shopping and aren’t sure, we recommend that you choose a product that has been independently certified by one of the organisations above so you can be sure of its organic standards.
